Current Events: New Zealands Earthquake

On Saturday at 4:35 a.m. ( Friday Sep/3/10 12:35 p.m. U.S) an earthquake hit the city of Christchurch New Zealand. The magnitude of the earthquake is calculated to be 7.0 to 7.1 and had 6 miles of depth. The Earthquake hit only the south island as well as some farms outside the city. In a population of 350,000 people, only 2 people were severely hurt but the rest of the people received minor injuries. The quake left the city a mess. It took down power lines, wrecked roads and knocked down building facades. A couple people took advantage of the situation and started to break into stores to steal things but the police quickly controlled the situation by arresting the looters. I think this is a devastating incident to the city of Christchurch because not only did the earthquake alarm the sleeping residents but the quake caused thousands of dollars worth of damage. This will affect many store owners whose merchandise was crushed and destroyed during the event.Right now the power, water, and phone signal are still out but officials are taking care of it. The good thing is that scientist confirmed that the earthquake would not cause a tsunami. My question is, why do people take advantage of the situation in a bad way and start stealing goods from stores? Why instead don't they help people who are injured?

  1. Hi Yasidh! I hadn't read up on this story, but its unfortunate that this happened to such a beautiful country like New Zealand. It does suck that, after physical damages from the earthquake that victims then have to deal with thieves and vandals. As bad as this situation is, it does't look like it'll be as bad as the Haiti earthquake from earlier this year. 2010 hasn't been a good year for Mother Nature.

  2. Although it is sad that the cities got destroyed it is good to know there were no deaths caused by the earthquake.
