Hallowed Ground

Next week marks the 10th anniversary of September 11. This was a day which will be remembered as a day in which our nation suffered great loss of innocent lives. That of which includes the 33 passenger and 7 crew members aboard Flight 93 that crashed a few minutes after 10 a.m. that fateful day. The presumed targets were either the U.S. capital or the White House, yet the plane came crashing down on a former mining site in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The heroic actions of the people aboard that flight will be immortalized with the Flight 93 National Park, the only 9/11 memorial designated as a national park. I believe that this is a great way to remember the people aboard that flight. This park can hold the same purpose as the site of Pearl Harbor, a preservation of the significance that site has to US history. What do you think about this new National Park being made in memory of the lives lost on United Flight 93?

  1. Very interesting and appropriate topic Isabella! Having been a high school freshman when 9/11 happened, the scenes from that day are burned into my memory forever. It's difficult to really deal with this recent event - it will be some time before people really grasp the full meaning of that horrific day. In many ways this nation changed for the worse after that. It will be interesting to see how this national park is established over the long run. Where did you find this story from Bella?
