Legendary QB Hall of Famer Dies
No More Counting Sheep!
It's a sailboat! It's a Ship! It's a......Whale Surfer???
I personally am a big fan of animals, especially our whale friends, and these actions may frighten or alarm the whale, but these police are just a tad exaggerated. I'm sure a simple warning to others not to do the same should suffice, but an investigation? As Ms. Hatfield would say, really? Well, its not like they have anything better to do, besides chasing kangaroos. Any opinions my fellow classmates?

Longer School Hours???
American students are falling behind some of their foreign counterparts, especially in math and science, and that's got to change, Obama said. Seeking to revive a sense of urgency that education reform may have lost amid the recession's focus on the economy, Obama declared that the future of the country is at stake.
"Whether jobs are created here, high-end jobs that support families and support the future of the American people, is going to depend on whether or not we can do something about these schools," the president said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show.
I agree that students maybe falling behind and we should do something about it but I'm not sure if I agree with longer school hours.

American HIV Problem!
Whether it is gay people or not, CDC estimates that over 1 million people are HIV positive, while only 21% of these people know it. Hopefully we can find a way to help people become more aware of STD's and how to prevent them because the numbers are only getting higher.

Suspect Nabbed in Seton Hall Murder Case
A suspect was arrested in a raid on an East Orange home Monday night as part of the investigation into the shooting death of Seton Hall University student Jessica Moore early Saturday morning.
A source told NBCNewYork that the arrest wuz made on the same street where the off-campus party was being held when Moore was shot. The 19-year-old student died the next day from her injuries.
"He's definitely the shooter," a law-enforcement source said of the suspect who was taken away within minutes after police raided the house.
As police and several people who had been at the party described, the suspect had tried to crash a party just after midnight Saturday but was hustled out the door.
He went to a buddy on the sidewalk, said "Give me the banger" and then went back inside and opened fire.
In addition to Moore, 4 others were hit by gunfire, though none critical.
Two of the injured are 19-year-old women who go to Seton Hall, and one is a 25-year-old man who attends the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The other is a 20-year-old man from New York who is not a student.
Lawmen say they expect to arrest another person being questioned as well.

First the SB1070 racism argument, now there are racist billboards???
Babeu stated, "I find it to be highly inappropriate and blantantly false to put my quote there with a picture of a very innocent and obviously Hispanic family."
Babeu concluded that by casting a racial pall over the border security issue is to do a disservice to national security and law enforcement.
I personally could not believe someone would even think to post a quote like that next to a picture of any minority family.
What do you guys think about the billboard???

Go away you creep! BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG!(thud)
I think that this a recurring theme, I mean a guy shows up to your party, uninvited of course, then comes back and shoots your guests. It's happened before (the shooting part). Remember Virginia Tech, some random guy starts shooting randomly at students and manages to kill many including himself. Now let's go close to home, at the UofA, a student showed up to class and shot three teachers and himself in 2002. As shown above the most outrageous shootings happen at colleges.
Anyone agree?

Police: Washington State Woman Made Up Acid Attack Story
Seventeen days after she was “attacked”, Bethany confessed that her injuries were self-inflicted and that the events described before were made-up. She said that she had actually bought drain cleaner and went to a public restroom where she used gloves and towels to apply the drain cleaner to her face. She did not confess why she did it, and her parents said that even they had not sensed any kind of trouble before the incident. The Vancouver police had spent hundreds of hours looking for the suspect, who was described by Storro to be an African American woman, only to find out that their time had been wasted. The community of Vancouver had also united and raised donations for Bethany’s medical expenses. They had raised around $25,000 for Bethany which she used later to buy things such as clothes, dinners, and train tickets. She is now being charged with three counts of 2nd degree theft. Even though her motive is not yet known, I believe that her motive was obviously to quickly gain some money.
At first, I had felt sorry for Bethany Storro when I read the article describing her being attacked. Now I think she is simply PATHETIC. Yes, it is sad that you have to pour acid on yourself to get some money from donations, but haven’t you ever heard of a JOB? I mean come on, there are many other options available in order to earn some money. Leeching off other people’s sympathy is just sick. I don’t have any sympathy at all for Bethany. In fact, I have more sympathy for the people who donated their money than I have towards Bethany. She clearly had planned it out and she ended up getting what she deserved. Oh yeah and on top of all that, there is a high possibility that she could have inspired the crazy person who had ACTUALLY attacked a woman in Arizona with acid. Bethany Storro is just one example of the many sick people in our world.
What do you guys think?

Where's our freedom?
Freedom of the Press - John Peter Zenger!
In addition to reading Chapter 3 of the American Nation textbook for homework, I need for you to read the short article provided in THIS LINK.
http://www.earlyamerica.com/earlyamerica/bookmarks/zenger/
This article deals with John Peter Zenger who, you may recall, published articles comparing the governor of New York to a monkey resulting in the closure of his printing press. The ensuing lawsuit established freedom of the press in the 13 colonies that would form the original 13 US States.
For the last part of this week's blog assignment, it is your mission to:
1. Read the short article
2. Students with the last name A-L will provide a short summary and a short reflection making the connection between the Zenger case and current issues pertaining to freedom of the press (e.g., specific examples of how it has protected society in recent years [investigative reporting], or how it has been restricted [ban on press access to coffins of killed US troops 2001-2009])
3. Students with the last name M-Z will make a response comment to those original posts published by your classmates. Respond by stating what YOU felt about the Zenger case and to what extent you agree with the original poster and WHY (using the types of examples mentioned in #2). These response comments must amount to at least 1 paragraph.
The deadline for this assignment is 11:59 PM on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010. Please shoot me an email if you have any questions!
PS: The John Peter Zenger assignment is the only blog work you need to do this weekend!

Freedom of the Press: El Diario, los narcos, and a community in fear
A lot of you have commented on the issue of drug violence and the Mexican press's response to this through self-censorship. For those of you who wish to discuss this in your comments, check out this article from the UNAM's newspaper, La Jornada.
Final note - those of you who do not publish your posts by 11:59PM tonight (Monday) will lose 50% of your grade for this assignment if you publish after that time.
Freedom of the press
I personally think that freedom of the press is a good thing as long as their are some boundaries. People deserve to know the truth and to speak their minds but there are some limits we have to respect being considerate of peoples privacy.
Freedom of the Press
I personally think this is hilarious. The fact that a leader abusing of his power getting it all thrown back in his face is pleasing. The governor got what he deserved but I would very much like to know what happened to this crazy governor and I would also like to know what became of Zenger. Did they get eaten by bears? Anywho, John Peter Zenger paved the way for an ammendment that became of much use and influence in the many many decades to come.
Freedom of the Press
An example of freedom of the press is: The case of Near vs. Minnesota
In this case a newspaper criticized local officials in Minnesota. A state law existed in which authorities were allowed to close down any " malicious, scandalous, and defamatory newspaper." The state ended up using this law to enjoin the newspaper.
Later, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Near. The Court found the injunction on the newspaper to be an "unconstitutional infringement of free speech". If false accusations appear in a newspaper, the proper remedy is a libel action.
This is a case in which freedom of the press won, showing that we do have more rights that we did 200+ years ago.
Freedom of the press
John Peter Zenger published a newspaper in New York to voice opposition to the onerous policies of newly appointed colonial governor William Cosby in the year 1773. Supported by many of the members of the popular party, Zenger's New-York newspaper continued to publish articles critical of William Cosby. Cosby didn’t like it and he issued a proclamation condemning the newspaper's "divers scandalous, virulent, false and seditious reflections." On Sunday, November 17, 1734 Zenger was arrested and charged with seditious libel. Andrew Hamilton defended Zenger after about 8 months of being in prison. After a short time the jury decided that Zenger was not guilty. The truth is an absolute defense against libel.
I believe that today there is freedom of the press, but not exactly everywhere. Like for example all the bad things that are happening in Mexico. I believe there is no freedom of the press in Mexico because many bad things happen and yet they are not published in the newspaper. Rumors are heard that the newspapers are threatened to not publish everything that is going on.
