CURRENT EVENT: "Acid attack victim: Sunglasses -- and God's hand -- saved my vision"

At 7:15 p.m. Monday, August 30, Bethany Storro had stopped at a Starbucks in Vancouver, just after she had bought a pair of sunglasses. A woman walked up to her with a cup in her hand and said, “Hey pretty girl, do you want a drink of this?” When Bethany said no, the woman threw the contents of the cup in her face and fled the building. Unfortunately for Bethany, the cup was filled with acid.

The acid made holes through her clothes and went through her face. She said that she could hear the acid bubbling and sizzling on her face. Luckily for her, the sunglasses she was wearing prevented the acid from going into her eyes and damaging her eyesight. Bethany went through surgery at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland where she is slowly recovering.

Police say that the attack was random. The suspect has not been found. She is described to be an African-American woman with slicked back hair made into a pony tail. My question is how can someone be heartless enough to walk up to a stranger and pour acid on his/her face and never get caught? Where are the authorities? And what do you get out of doing something like this? Is it fun to watch someone’s face being disintegrated by acid? This is just ridiculous. If that cowardly lady enjoys playing with acid so much, why doesn’t she pour it on herself, instead of having someone else suffer and go through the pain that she caused? Sadly to say, the world is pretty messed up.
