American suspicions frustrate U.S Muslims

Every since the 9/11 attack Americans have been very suspicious of all the muslim race. It has gotten worse because people want to build an Islamic center at ground zero! this of course has cost people to get really angry which is leading to a lot of kaous that a paster named terry Jones was considering burning the Qur'an, the Muslim bible. In my opinion i don not think it is fair for them to burn their Qu'ran , not every Muslim was involved with the attack! Even though in the end he decided not to go through with the burning of the Qu'ran damage has been done . People all over the world are attacking Muslims!Copies of the Muslim's holy book were torn up in New York and Washington, and burned in Tennessee and Kansas. In the streets in Afghanistan there are thousands of protesters. Three were shot, one of them seriously injured and threats to storm US military bases have been made! According to msnbc.com ,Barack Obama, at a 9/11 ceremony at the Pentagon yesterday, repeated his calls for restraint, saying: "As Americans, we are not – and never will be – at war with Islam." He said the US would stay true to its tradition as a diverse and tolerant nation. But his pleas went unheeded in isolated ceremonies across the country. Burning their holy book will not solve anything! how do you think the situation should have been handled?

  1. Melissa! Thanks for posting this story for us to share - this ties in PERFECTLY with the essay topic you guys are working on (as well as our discussion on religious freedom from last week).

A lot of people are up in arms over this particular issue, but a lot of them are unaware that the proposed mosque at Ground Zero is neither a mosque nor is it in Ground Zero - the proposed project is an Islamic community center featuring a gym, an auditorium, and a small prayer area (sort of like an Islamic YMCA); the site of this proposed community center is a few blocks north of the WTC site, in an area where this type of development could benefit the neighborhood economy.

As horrific as 9/11 was, our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have killed thousands of more people than the Al'Qaeda terrorists did with their hijacked airliners - where is the mourning for the children of Iraq? Where is the mourning for the broken families of Afghanistan? We as citizens of the U.S. tend to ignore the big picture and only focus on our own problems, without seeing how we contribute to other peoples' suffering.

Excellent post Melissa - just one correction: Islam is not a race of people (just as Christianity isn't a race), its a religion that is open to all peoples. ;)
