Blog Assignment #2

Hey everyone!

I must say that I am enjoying reading your first document-based question items. This, of course, is a start - I am looking forward to where we can develop our analytical approaches to documents like these. For now, I need for you guys to make one more original blog post for this week, this time based on a relevant news item you learned about through either TV, print, or online sources.

You are free to choose whatever topic you like - I just ask that you find one that it relevant to US History in some way (therefor political/economic stories will probably be helpful for that purpose). This post will be a minimum of 1 paragraph in length, in which you will explain what the story is about, what questions you have about that story, and , finally, your opinion on the whole issue itself. Make sure that you list the source of your story (TV Channel and Time; Newspaper and Date; website and retrieval date)!

Do your best folks - you have until 11:59 PM on Monday, Sept 6 to type up your news post. Don't for get to comment on 3 other students posts with thoughtful/well-written comments.

EX: Another Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico?
"Oil Platform Catches on Fire in Gulf; Workers Ok" (Yahoo! News - Sept 2 2010)

Less than 5 months since the infamous BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill another possible oil rig disaster looms before us. The Associated Press reports that an oil rig owned by Mariner Energy had a fire on the morning of Sept 2; reports now suggest that oil might be leaking from the site. The U.S. Coast Guard is on the scene monitoring the situation, but many Gulf Coast residents are worried about this becoming another major disaster for the already hard-hit region. This platform, among 3400 across the U.S., once again shows how dangerous oil rigs and the consumption of oil can be for the environment. In my opinion, this latest spill - which likely won't be like the ongoing BP crisis - reaffirms why we need alternative and more eco-friendly forms of fuel. We need to protect out Spaceship Earth. My question: when will the U.S. public begin holding its leaders accountable for passing clean-energy laws? How many more oil spills do we need before we kick the habit?

  1. Hey Mr. Parra,
This is K@rlitoz, your best student in AP History. I don't know whether I fully agree with you because accidents happen in every sort of industry, including the energy one. We could do what President Obama wanted to do earlier this summer - put a freeze on oil drilling for some time - but I don't think we can afford to pay higher gas prices in this recession. What we should do is keep in mind that accidents don't happen all the time - in fact because of the economy we should drill oil in Alaska so that prices can go down as supply goes up. Peace yo!
